Prof. Dr. Dr. Edgar Biemer
Since 1974, microsurgery has been one of my main fields of interest. In November 1975, this led to the establishment of the first replantation center in Germany, which is also a respected center for free tissue transfer. Since that time, I have regularly been organizing instructional courses for microsurgery in Munich, as well as all over the world. As a visiting professor, I have been invited to many international centers on all five continents. I have published well over 190 articles in national and international journals and contributed chapters to numerous books. Together with Dr. Duspiva, I am the author of the first text book for “Reconstructive Microsurgery“.
My awards include the “Lexer Prize“ of the German Society of Surgery, the ”Dieffenbach Medal“ of the German Plastic Surgeons, and the ”Fellow ad hominem“ of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
I am a founding member and the first secretary of the ”German Speaking Group of Microsurgery for peripheral nerves and vessels“. From 1981 to 1985, I was secretary, and, from 1993 to 1995, president of the “International Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery“ (ISRM).
Between 1994 and 1995, I was president of the ”German Association of Plastic Surgeons“ and founder and first president of the “German Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons”. I was a member of the Executive Committee of IPRAS, first as ISRM representative, and later as national delegate of Germany. Furthermore, I am a honorary member of many international and national Societies, e. g. the “American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery“, the “Indian Association of Surgeons”, and the “Argentina Association of Orthopedics an Traumatology”.
In July 2008, after years of preparation, my team and I successfully accomplished the world's first transplantation of two complete arms. For this, I was awarded the “Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Medal” of the Technical University Munich.
In recent years, I have also begun important activities in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery. Thus, I was able to introduce the use of many new techniques in this field in Germany like Endoscopic Plastic Surgery, Liposuction, Composite- Facelift, and others.
A central part of my work as highly experienced specialist has long been the provision of advanced trainings in Endoscopic Facial Rejuvenation, around the world.
